Dumfries and Galloway – The Waterhouse
Types of accommodation
Location
Kirkcudbright DG6 4XS, Scotland
Description

Luxury accommodation by pond in secluded gardens.
Building on The Waterhouse was started in early 2006 and completed in May 2007. The building is of exceptionally high quality and has been built by ourselves, from our own design and using the skills of local craftsmen. It is nearly all homemade, down to the doors and windows.
It is surrounded by stunning, undulating countryside, nestled by a farm track with fields full of sheep and cows in summer months. It is only 3 miles from the coast and woodland and hill walks are minutes away, as are a number of lochs.
The Waterhouse has a DOUBLE BEDROOM with a chunky wooden bed and a glass door opening on to the deck. There is a second, small bedroom with built in, comfortable, wide BUNK BEDS for children or agile adults.
The bathroom between bedrooms has a solar heated shower (with mains back up), WC washbasin and heated towel rail. Water is from a well, automatically pumped and filtered.
The well-appointed kitchen, with gas hob and oven, is part of the open-plan living space, which has wrap around South facing windows overlooking the pond. This has a dining table for 4, a leather sofa and chairs. It has a built in good quality CD & RADIO system. A 21 inch flat wide screen DVD player is available on request free of charge Large oak framed glass double doors open onto a large sundeck for exclusive use by Waterhouse guests. All furniture is high quality, UK crafted and wooden, like the house. The interior has a high open spacious roof with large areas of windows giving a light airy feeling throughout the year. Heating is from a wood pellet biomass stove in the living room, which is like a wood burning stove, but with the push button convenience of an electric stove. Small space heaters are fitted in the bedrooms and movable electric heaters provide backup.
The deck has tables, chairs and sunloungers where you can eat, relax and sunbathe This has steps leading onto a pond side sundeck with a heated outside hot tub that can be used anytime of year, even New Years day. We find this wonderful in winter months and we think The Waterhouse makes a perfect winter-short break as well as for Summer holidays, particularly from nearby cities like Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Highland, Scotland – cottage (Kyle of Lochalsh)
Types of accommodation
Location
Kyle of Lochalsh, Scotland
Description

1 ensuite double bedroom,1 twin bedroom cottage ideally based for touring and relaxing.

A secluded 2 bedroom cottage just off Kyle of Lochalsh main street. It is also a 5 minute drive to the famous Skye Bridge so is a terrific base from which to explore the beautiful island of Skye. There are signposted walks to the Plock View point starting outside the garden gate. From the Plock, about 10 minutes walk there is a 360 degree view of the surrounding area including the lochs and over towards Skye and the other islands of the Inner Sound.

The cottage is set back away from the main road of Kyle and discreetly surrounded by very tall thick rhododendron hedge. The front garden is a great suntrap ideal for naturist sunbathing, it can get very warm indeed sheltered from breezes. Most of the rest of the garden area is also secluded and to one side of the cottage the garden extends into woodland where a short naturist ramble can be taken, outside the property bounds, along a path unobserved. The path leads out to playing fields and coves but before the fence and through more bushes to these it is completely secluded and rarely used by others.

There are several attractions within Kyle of Lochalsh such as the glass bottom boat tours, seal boat tours and a Railway Museum.

Further away with short drives are the picturesque villages of Plockton with its wonderful Plockton Shores restaurant and Plockton Inn and Plockton Hotel restaurants. (Plockton is accessible by train from Kyle). Near Plockton is Craig Highland Farm with a large variety of rare farm breeds and other creatures.

The nearby village of Kyleakin in Skye also has a picturesque harbour and sign posted walks to Castle Moil.

On the mainland the world famous Eilan Donan Castle is near Kyle and a stop for a walk in Lochalsh Woodland Gardens Gardens on the way to Eilan Donan is well worth a visit.

There are several great walks in the area by sea lochs and land lochs. Detailed descriptions of these walks can be found on Walk Scotland website.

And of course, what everyone comes here for, to tour Skye. The cottage is situated very near to the Skye bridge. So Portree is under an hours drive away and in the other direction a scenic road trip down the southern point of Skye at Armadale where the ferry crosses to Mallaig is also about an hours drive. And trips to the Quiraing, Fairy Pools, Old Man of Stour, AROS Centre or Dunvegan Castle are also convenient from Kyle. There are bus services to Portree from Kyle.

At the cottage, with the tall rhododendron trees the front garden can be an excellent wind sheltered and privately discrete sun trap for sunbathing in sunny afternoons. There is an grassed area at the side of the house ringed by stone and with an interesting rock face that is ideal for BBQs and also has a fire pit.

The cottage has an open fire, which has an ash pit beneath so is easy to set as the ash pit bucket only needs emptying after about 5 days to a week. Small bags of coal can be purchased at the Coop supermarket if an evening by the fire is wanted.

We welcome dogs and If you have a well behaved dog or two, there is good dog walking from outside the gate up to the Plock view points or from actually within the garden to just follow the path along through the trees quite a distance or go further and follow the path down to the rocky coves, such as the old Fisherman's Bay or again without leaving the garden, you can walk through the trees and bushes for a hundred yards or so unclothed or carry on clothed down to the shore and on.
